Cockroaches:
|
|
|
|
They
are the oldest groups of insects; the German cockroach and the American
cockroach are the two most popular roaches found in Jamaica. The
German cockroach is twelve to seventeen millimeters long, tan to
light brown and has two dark brown stripes on the body region just
behind the head. Females produce four to eight egg capsules during
their lifetime, with each capsule containing approximately forty
eggs. The female German cockroach retains the egg capsule until
eggs are ready to hatch. German cockroaches are widespread and can
be found in homes, restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes or apartments.
American cockroach is one of the largest cockroaches that are about
forty millimeters long with a reddish-brown body. The centre portion
of the body is light brown, while the outer
edges are yellow. The female American cockroach will not retain
the egg capsule for more than a day after its formation. The female
produce six to fourteen capsules with each containing fourteen to
sixteen eggs, eggs hatch in fifty to fifty-five days. |
|
What
do roaches need to survive? |
|
Cockroaches
are scavengers an will eat anything organic. They prefer food such
as starches, sweets, grease, and meat products, but other items
may include cheese, beer, leather, glue, hair, and starch in book
bindings, flakes of dried or decaying organic matter (plant or animal). |

Termites: |
|
Termites
are social insects and each one has developed effective ways to
get at and at and attack the wood in your homes and offices. Their
workers are best described as “little white things”
or “little white ants” that are often found in damp,
rotten wood. Termites consist of five different caste system, these
are: worker termites, soldier termites, winged reproductive termites,
a queen and a king termite.
The worker termite
is responsible for caring of eggs, constructing and maintaining
tunnels, foraging for food and feeding and grooming for other
caste members. The worker termites are white and soft bodied.
The soldier termites are the defender
of the colony; they are white and soft bodied with an enlarged
hardened head containing two large jaws, or mandibles, which are
used as a weapon against predators. The winged reproductive termites
produce the offspring in the colony.
The Queen and King
termites: The king termite assist the queen in creating and attending
to the colony during its initial formation. The queen termite
creates the colony by laying eggs and tending to the colony until
enough workers and nymphs are produced to care for the colony.
The queen can live for more than ten (10) years and produce hundreds
of eggs each year. A colony can produce several million termites
with the help of secondary queens who also produce eggs.
|
|
What
do termites need to survive and when do they attack? |
|
Termites
require three things to survive; food (i.e, wood or other cellulose
material) consistent source of moisture and moderate to tropical
environment. Termites can consume over fifteen pounds of wood in
a week and infestation begins around March 1st and continues until
the first or second week of May.
